Georgia: media round table and field visits to raise awareness on child rights violations

During the month of April, the Coalition for Children and Youth (CCY) arranged a media round table and journalist field visits, as part of the project “United Voices for Children”. The aim of the initiative was to raise awareness about the coalition’s activities, child rights in Georgia, and reflect on the importance of the collaboration between media and civil society organisations to monitor child right violations.

The media round table was attended by eighteen journalists representing different TV, print and on line media outlets.  The Georgian coalition’s Chairperson and board members presented the organisation’s mission, action plan and challenges in the field of child rights. An invited guest from the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics represented a statistic and monitoring report from 2013 and gave recommendations to the journalists about the reporting process of child rights violations. The chairperson acknowledged the successful business cooperation with the local Hotel Mgzavrebi.

The journalists actively involved in the discussion process raised questions about the issues on the agenda and expressed readiness for future cooperation.

The media field visit was attended by eight journalists who visited three service provider organization

  • SOS Children’s Village – Small group home service
  • First Step Georgia – 4 services including a day center for children with disabilities
  • World Vision – day and 24hr center for children living and working in the street

Each host organization explained what kind of service they provide for children, their achievements and challenges. The journalists had opportunity to see the conditions children are living in and also speak with some of them.
